Barcelona release throwback Ronaldinho 05/06 jersey ahead of Brazil legend's Netflix documentary

Barcelona dipped back into the archives again for their latest jersey release, and this time it was one a lot of fans wouldn’t be able to ignore, celebrating a truly unique legend of the game.

A remake of the club’s iconic 2005/06 home shirt released in limited quantities, celebrating the career and contributions of Brazilian legend Ronaldinho.

Barcelona 2005/06 kit remake leaked

Initially leaked a few months ago, the design has stayed very close to the original. That meant the classic red and blue striping, bold yellow side panels, and the unmistakable Total 90 template that defined mid-2000s football kits.

It was the shirt Ronaldinho wore when he (and football itself) was at its most magical. Barcelona won La Liga and the Champions League, with Ronaldinho lighting up Camp Nou with his trademark flair and trickery.

This wasn’t just a straight retro release either. The reissue release included both a plain Barcelona jersey as well as a dedicated “Ronaldinho 10” version of the shirt, leaning fully into the nostalgia and one of Nike's greatest ever athletes, rather than just quietly reissuing an old design.

As you would anticipate, this re-release was also be fairly limited. Around 7,000 units are expected, which put it firmly in collector territory rather than something you’d see everywhere on release day — with not all retailers stocking the shirt, instead specific retailers and the club shop only.

The timing lined up neatly, with Ronaldinho set to be the focus of an upcoming Netflix documentary, Ronaldinho: The One and Only.

Barcelona have created retro-inspired kits before, but this was different to the usual “inspired by” approach. This was basically a full throwback to one of the most memorable kits – and teams – of the modern era.

For a lot of fans of a certain age, the kit wasn’t simply one that looked nice, but was a memorial of some of their earliest, most exciting football memories, with Ronaldinho the star of the show.
